I have been involved with creating websites, since the beginning, working within company IT departments, creating sites for my employer, then as a consultant, writing sites for clients.
Once I was out creating sites for other businesses, I started running into a lot of misconceptions about what a website could do for a traditional business or organization. The clients had very unrealistic expectations and were, almost always, disappointed with the business results, even though they loved their web sites.
When I talked to these clients, I found out that these unrealistic expectations had come from my company's salespeople. The salespeople had lied to my clients; it wasn't always intentional lying, especially in the early days, but it was certainly non-truth.
